Hello Humans, Birds and Elephants,

You know, I am totally crazy about Amazon parrots. (actually, I am totally crazy, but that is another story for another time) I was watching "Pet Keeping with Marc Morone," this morning where he had a large bird stand with several species of Amazon parrots standing on it. There were lots of different delightful Amazon species all hanging out together. One look at this and I became transfixed.

Amazons have such lively and exciting personalities. They are beautiful, adorable, intelligent, have incredible personalities, and just altogether are my favorite family of parrots. I have always felt that yellow napes were the best, but the others are right up there with them. In particular I love double yellow heads; there is just something incredibly soulful in their faces. My Peabody, when we got passed the point where he wanted me dead, became my real friend. He was one of the old "wild caughts" and had been through his own personal hell. We overcame that and developed a wonderful relationship for the fifteen years that we lived together.

I think that there is something about certain creatures that just touches us. Amazons really do it for me, but so do macaws, certain cockatoos and cockatiels, among others. Isn’t it great that there is such a diversity among parrots so that we can all indulge our respective fancies. Matt prefers African greys, but I believe they pay him to say that.

Life, for me, is not much fun right now. This chemo is a killer and will be for the next six months. Then, if all goes well, we are going to try our India trip again. Positive thoughts, Rich, positive thoughts...but it is not always so easy. I visit Fritha, the elephant, as often as I can. She always makes me feel better. She understands me.

Thank God for Jackie. I could never have made it through this without her. She has quite a burden dealing with me and going to work at the same time. Would that I were independently wealthy and she could stay home. I am assured that I am not easy on a normal day, so you can just imagine how tough things are now for her. I can’t wait until all this is over and my life can resume its former regular insanity.

I want to thank Jose’ Gueits for being our speaker last month after Charles Wade who was originally scheduled became ill. I understand that Jose’ did a great job. Everyone, who has not already done so, should visit his store in Montgomery. It is truly the sweetest little bird store around. Also, I want to thank Ann Marie and Mark and who took over running the meeting as well as doing their own jobs. You guys are the best and I love you.

Tonight, I am so excited to have board certified avian veterinarian, Dr. Laurie Hess, as our guest speaker. We have been trying to arrange this for some time and now it is finally happening. We want to welcome Dr. Hess to our area. It is always wonderful to know that we have another competent veterinarian in our avian community and especially one so devoted to our birds.

Next month should bring us Donna Simchek (I hope I spelled that correctly) from Middle Creek Aviaries. Donna has spoken for us before and generally has a wonderful display of birds and accessories at our show in October. Important to start thinking about that show and how to make it even bigger and better than it has been in the past. Everyone, on the bird circuit, knows that it is the best show in America. Give your great ideas to Little Matthew B.

Thanks, again, to everyone for your cards, gifts and good wishes that you sent to me during this disgusting, obnoxious illness. It is really not fun. I am going to close here; have a great month.

Love,

Richie
